Today started out with the daughters of Zelophehad, which went back to the Manasseh clans, son of Joseph. This story was mentioned because their father only had daughters and no son to pass on the family name and accept their inheritance of land. The daughters came to Moses and explained how their father died in the wilderness, but he was not among the company that gathered themselves against the Lord with Korah. He died for his own sin, and had no sons.
They questioned why their father’s name should be taken away from their clan because he had no son. They asked for the possession of his land for themselves. Moses took their case before the Lord, and the Lord said, “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them.”
With this being done, it created a new law about inheritance of the land. If a man died and had no son, the inheritance would be transferred to his daughter. If there were no daughter, then the inheritance should be given to his brothers. If there were no brothers, then given to his father’s brothers. If his father had no brothers, then given to the nearest kinsman of his clan. “And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.”
The next section was all about how Joshua was chosen to succeed Moses. The Lord told Moses to go up into the mountain of Abarim and see the land the Lord had given to the people of Israel. Once he had seen it, he was to gather with his people, as his brother Aaron had; because Moses had rebelled against the Lord’s word at the waters of Meribah. https://liveandlearnjourney.com/day-49-numbers-19-21/
Moses spoke to the Lord saying, “Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.”
So the Lord appointed Joshua, son of Nun to this task. They were to stand in front of Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and Moses was to lay his hands on Joshua. This meant he was investing him with authority so the congregation would obey him.
Then, for whatever reason now, it went on to explain even more about offerings!
These chapters attest to the all-pervasiveness of sacrifice in the life of the people and to the enormity of the work of the priests. Perhaps the reason for these passages at this time is to give continuity to the impending transition from the leadership of Moses to that of Joshua.
