Day 56, Deuteronomy 1-2

Today started the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, which to my understanding is a retelling of Moses’ teachings and events of the previous books. Deuteronomy is a solemn call to love and obey the one true God. It emphasizes the idea that God’s laws are the result of God’s love; a gift for our own good. The love relationship of the Lord to his people and that of the people to the Lord as their sovereign God pervade the whole book. Deuteronomy’s spiritual emphasis and its call to total commitment to the Lord in worship and obedience inspired references to its message throughout the rest of Scripture. This book was also mainly written by Moses.

Almost all of Deuteronomy is made up of speeches by Moses during the final months of his life, just before the Israelites crossed the Jordan to enter Canaan.

It started with the retelling of the command to leave Horeb, or Mount Sinai. https://liveandlearnjourney.com/day-45-numbers-8-10/

Moses went on to explain the law to the people of Israel, which meant the ten commandments and other laws that were given at Mount Sinai and are recorded in Leviticus and Numbers. In Deuteronomy the laws are summarized and interpreted, and adjusted to the new, specific situation Israel would face in Canaan. Thus Deuteronomy is, in essence, a covenant renewal and updating document.

Then it went on to retell how the leaders were appointed as heads of each tribe. These men served as judges to listen to the cases of groups of people to share the burden Moses had endured himself. It also retold how spies were sent out to explore the land and report back. https://liveandlearnjourney.com/day-46-numbers-11-13/

However, they came back with false records and the people rebelled. The punishment for their rebellion was that none of them would be able to enter into the land God promised to their fathers. Then, it summarized how they were forced to wander the wilderness for forty years and the places they journeyed.

Today ended with a recap of when they defeated Kign Sihon and conquered the land, because he refused to let them pass through. https://liveandlearnjourney.com/day-49-numbers-19-21/

In conclusion, today was a complete retelling of previous events from the book of Numbers. I’m not sure if continuing like this will be easier or harder to study and journal since it is all just repetitive.
