One of my favorite times of the school year was when we got to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Usually this was done with an entire week planned out, and a different theme per day.
Classrooms would decorate their doors or bulletin boards, sometimes in a contest, and everyone would participate for the fun of it. By the end of the week we would have a read-a-thon and get to wear cozy pajamas. We got to spend almost the entire day doing my favorite thing…READING!
In honor of this time of year, I thought it would be fun to create a post of some of our memorable Dr. Seuss activities, bulletin boards, dress-up days, etc. Enjoy!
Participating in these activities was fun and very much encouraged. As an incentive the winning room got some tasty treats and prizes! Bookmarks, pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. were also distributed for different things and encouragement for the students to read throughout the day and take Accelerated Reading tests.
Some schools, who are able, even let students pick a free book or two from the book fair during this time.
I would lay out all sorts of books on different reading levels, and pull out book bins and baskets. We would also do many read alouds throughout the day of class favorites and Dr. Seuss classics. Of course you want to have your classroom library organized and ready to go as well!
Free reading was a large part of our day, management taken into consideration. Accelerated Reading tests were encouraged and tracked. Each test passed, got the student entered into a drawing to win Dr. Seuss loot!
Some schools even get to dress up as their favorite character for the day!
