Bible verses for comfort in times of sorrow

I will never understand why people are taken too soon.  Taken before their time.  Too young.  Parents burying their children, sometimes before they even have children of their own.  It is never easy when you lose someone, but it seems to be ever more heartbreaking when it is before their time.  But then again only God knows when it is someone’s time to join Him.

We’re left here on earth wondering and grieving for their loss, because we would rather have them here with us.  People grieve in all sorts of ways, no right way about it.  Ultimately, whatever you can do to get through a difficult time.

Since I have embarked on my Bible journey, I have started to look at things a little differently.  With the loss of a wonderful woman and friend recently; I found myself going to my Bible, which is something I had never done before.

Of course I have been, and will continue praying for her family and friends; but I never thought I’d be turning to the Bible for comfort or understanding.

I have put together a collection of verses for dealing with the loss of a loved one, and the grief that comes with it.  I hope these bring comfort.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

2 Corinthians 1:4-5

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.”

Be sober-minded; be watchful.  Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.  To him be the dominion forever and ever.  Amen.”
